Aircraft Marshalling

Course Objectives and Outcome
“The objective of the course is to train students in both rotary and fixed wing marshalling in all weather and lighting conditions on to both demarcated stands and unmarked areas, allowing for both nose out and into wind marshalling requirements of the aircraft as appropriate.”

Course Duration:
5 Days

Location:
On Site and Off Site (UAE and GCC)

By the end of the course, students will have achieved the following objectives and will have knowledge of and be able to:
  • Use the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for marshalling;
  • Be aware of the health and safety risks to when preparing to marshal aircraft; Be aware of the dimensional characteristics of the aircraft to be marshalled; Be aware of the turning characteristics of the aircraft to be marshalled;
  • Know and understand wing growth effects and the 20% safe separation rule;
  • Know the stand capabilities; Know airport ground markings;
  • Be aware of the adjacent stand(s) activity; Prepare the aircraft stand/ramp area for activity; Ensure that the stand area is clear of FOD;
  • Coordinate the actions of marshallers and other functions;
  • Recognise when a wing walker is required, and act as one if appropriate; Use the correct marshalling equipment;
  • Identify which route the aircraft is to be marshalled;
  • Provide the flight deck crew with guidance to safely position aircraft; Know local airlines procedures and signals;
  • How to marshal the aircraft by day and at night ;
  • How to marshal the aircraft on to a demarcated stand or area; How to marshal the aircraft on to a non-demarcated area;
  • How to marshal the aircraft nose-out or into-wind;
  • How to dispatch an aircraft using standard marshalling signals;
  • Use and understand signals including: emergency stop; proceed under guidance of another marshal; move ahead; open up starboard engine or turn to port; open up port engine or turn to starboard; stop; start engines; chocks inserted; chocks away; cut engines; slow down; slow down engines on indicated side; this bay; all clear; marshalling finished; hover; land; move upwards; move downwards; move horizontally; move back; release load; release brakes; engage breaks; start engine(s); attach or detach the GPU, ASU, start/stop rotors, fire;
  • How to co-ordinate aircraft power backs;
  • Know and be able to demonstrate emergency signals; Interpret signals from the flight deck crew of an aircraft; Demonstrate an awareness of VDGS systems;
  • Know the airport’s Low Visibility Procedures, and;
  • How to activate the airport’s emergency procedures
